There are several classifications on sport tourism but the two big categories are Sports Events and Active Sport Tourism.

Sports Event Tourism refers to the quantity of people participating at a competitive sport events where the events are the motivation that attracted the visitors to come and watch the competition ─ think of the recent Pan Am Games ─ or it can be when the tourist travels to participate in recreational sporting events or signing up for leisure interests such as Hiking, Skiing and Canoeing.

Orillia offers opportunities for both Sports Events i.e., the annual Perch Festival, or a Labour Day Sailing Regatta as well as league/team events such as the popular Orillia Minor Hockey Annual Jim Wilson Chevrolet Winter Classic.
